Why 1st order equations?

For 1st order equation, if we know the initial values of all variables, we can get a unique solution.
If we get complet variables, the equations would be 1st order.
So, why should we know the momentum or velocity? Coordinares and moumentum are the complete describe of a mass point, the danymical equation of it is a 2nd order equation, if we want to get a determine solution, we should make it into a 1st order equations, so we get moumentum.
