2.1-English.Reciting The Four Immeasurables

The Immeasurable Equanimity

With definitive knowing and belief,
we attend to all phenomena of the inner and outer world without attachment or aversion.
All phenomena are incorporeal and illusive by nature.
We shall stay aloof from differentiating love and hatred, friend and foe.
But practise equanimity towards all sentient beings.

舍無量心——
了知一切內外、身心世界, 皆是虛幻, 無有實體。
捨棄嗔恨怨敵，與貪愛親友的執著 , 對一切眾生無有親疏和愛憎而平等對待。

The Immeasurable Loving Kindness

With loving kindness towards all sentient beings we give them happiness and peace.
We help them to avoid afflictive emotions and aversion.
We show them the path to cultivate wholesomeness and obtain liberation, and hence as they stop replanting the seed of suffering, they gain wisdom and blessings.
We treat all sentient beings as equals, and with endless love, we care for them as dear as our own children.

慈無量心——
愛護眾生, 給予他們幸福安樂, 不令他們墮於憂賭惱。
常以修善和解脫之道, 增長他們的福慧 , 不使再種苦因。
平等看待一切有情, 猶如自己的親子, 阿護無微不至, 無有窮盡。

The Immeasurable Compassion

Be compassionate to those who live a wrongful life which causes them immediate or future suffering. For them, at all costs, I will endure humiliation, hardships, and even beatings.
I will try to reduce their suffering by explaining to them the right ways at the right time.
For those who are experiencing hardship, I will comfort and guide them with kindness.
Without reservation, I will pass on them the causes of their suffering, show them the path to reduce the afflictive emotions and even how to stop all the suffering.
I shall regard their distress as if they are mine, and guide all beings with kind words, equanimity and boundless empathy.

悲無量心——

憐憫那些行為顛倒, 常造苦因, 他日必受苦果的眾生。
為了他們,即使歷盡艱辛, 遭受毀辱甚至打罵,也要伺機勸諫點化, 示以正路。
又對正受苦報的眾生, 善言勸慰,為他們做種種布施, 盡量減滅他們的苦惱,
並解說他們受苦的因由, 及不令苦惱再生之法。
平等看待一切有情, 以他們的苦惱為自己的苦惱。憐惜無有窮盡。

The Immeasurable Empathetic Joy

Delighted in other people’s auspicious moments and received blessings, my heart is in rapture.
I am overjoyed when they are happy and free from suffering;
and when they continually accumulate virtues by practicing wholesome deeds,
They generate the Mind for Enlightenment as their wisdom increases.
Even when others are doing better than me,
I shall not be jealous or envious.
I rejoice in others’ happiness and liberation with equnimity,admiration and endless joy.

喜無量心——

見到眾生平安如意, 吉祥順遂, 離苦得樂, 更能常行善法, 增長福慧, 趣向菩提, 心中便喜不自勝; 就是眾生的成就解脫更勝於自己, 也不生嫉妒,
同時滿心歡喜, 平等喜視一切眾生, 為他們的快樂與解脫, 而高興讚歎, 快慰無有窮盡!
