It was raining heavily outside one morning. A man, rushed getting to his office on a packed bus, felt a sudden surge of anger because he was prodded sharply on the ankle by something like an umbrella.
His attempts to get back at that rash passenger was thwarted by the crowdedness. His anger intensified as the vibration of the bus sent more prods at his ankle. He was ready to give a severe telling off.
Lots of people got off at the next stop. Now he could turn around to elbow aside the so-called umbrella and glared at its owner, only to find that it was a crutch on which a blind passenger leaned. The glance drove his boiling anger and agonizing pain away.
What accounted for such a sudden change in how he felt? On the face of it, it is the so-called umbrella and its owner that aroused his anger. But in reality, the root lies in his idea that the fellow passenger was rash and rude which changed as he found the truth. His feelings changed along with his changes of mind.
As told in Chuang Tzu, a man rowing a boat against the current on a foggy day was astonished to find that another boat drifting down the stream shot towards him. He got so angry and shouted out to veer that. But his shout went unheeded and the boat bumped into him. To his surprise, it was an empty boat. He shook his head with resignation and his anger vanished.
On many occasions, it is not what happened but how you think of it causes harm. Your thought is what is on your mind. Your fate changes along with changes in your mind. The world also changes along with changes in your mind. Truth, coupled with tolerance and compassion toward the underprivileged, stimulates these changes. With truth in mind, you will calm down and your anger will vanish and you will get peaceful. There is only a slight boundary between good and evil.
