The essence of happiness and true freedom
Chapter 10 Free Will and The Suffering of Existence
It is commonly known that human beings are subjective creatures, in other words, human beings have free will and creativity.
According to the second law of thermodynamics, an isolated system always tends to increase in entropy (shāng), eventually reaching the maximum state, in other words, the most chaotic state.
However, within an isolated system, if there is "an organism with free will”, the entropy of the isolated system will continue to decrease before the creature dies.
Just like a stream flowing eastward in a great river, everything without free will must flow eastward. Imagine however, living organisms with free will, they would swim against the current all the way to the source of the great river. Whatever is controlled by human beings with free will can also go against the current.
Human beings are regarded as spiritual beings due to their spirituality which is reflected in free will. Although human beings have free will, human beings do not understand the universe, the truth and absolute truth of life. Thus, free will would act mindlessly, which becomes the catalyst for restless behaviour.
Free will produces inertial energy, which does not disappear but is stored in the form of energy.
Free will is constantly fabricated, and in the process of fabrication, it will accumulate more and more habitual energy. We refer to this habitual energy accumulated by free will as karma. Karma, through the continuous practice, accumulates energy, which is called habitual karma.
Paradoxically, there is good karma and bad karma, and neither good nor bad karma.
We have all heard the term “zào yè"(麻烦老师另外找普通话男生念诵,替换一下). “Zao" 麻烦老师另外找普通话男生念诵,替换一下)means fabrication and creation, and "yè"麻烦老师另外找普通话男生念诵,替换一下) refers specifically to the inertia of the energy accumulated by creation, it doesn’t carry the meaning of zàoniè (committing evil.) We have also heard the term "jiā yè”麻烦老师另外找普通话男生念诵,替换一下), which is the wealth and property accumulated by family members through the hard work of creating wealth.
The inertial nature of habitual karma will in turn act on free will, therefore the force that acts against free will is called karma.
In short, it is very important for us to have a clear and profound understanding of the term "karma". As habitual karma and karma becomes more intense, human freedom begins to diminish
For example: smoking, if a person does not smoke at all, they neither have habitual karma nor subject to the karma of smoking itself. Therefore, they are completely at ease in regards to the matter of smoking.
However, one day, out of the blue, a friend tempts them to smoke. In the beginning on occasions, they only smoked a few cigarettes, and they have not yet become addicted. Their sense of compulsion to smoke is very weak. That is to say, their karmic habit of smoking is very weak; their degree of freedom is still relatively large.
After a period of habitual unconsciousness desire for cigarettes, slowly, one pack every two days becomes one pack a day, the karmic habit of smoking is gradually increasing, in consequence smoking becomes a little more addictive. At this point, the karma of smoking will make people faintly feel pressured and uncomfortable.
We call this sense of pressure and discomfort brought about by karma as The Suffering of Existence.
Then, when the craving for smoking is getting bigger and bigger, and later, two packs or even three packs a day is required. At this time, the karma generated by smoking is already very strong, and they have almost no qualms in regards to smoking. If they don’t smoke, the karma will make them feel very miserable; if they succumb to the karma and smoke, it will make one feel " The Suffering of Change", pleasure.
From there on, under the drive of karma due to The Suffering of Existence from addiction, one will constantly experience the transformation between suffering and The Suffering of Change, in a vicious circle. Smoking, which once was a state of ease and happiness devolves into a state of unease and unhappiness.
Another example: playing video games. If a person does not play video games at all, that person has neither karma nor habitual karma, therefore they are at ease.
Although one day, influenced by a friend, they start to play video games. At the beginning, they only played occasionally, so their sense of compulsion to play games is relatively weak. The habitual karma to play video games is very weak. At that point they still own their freedom, relatively speaking.
In a short timespan, after playing for one to two hours a day, then to four or five hours a day, the habitual karmic action of playing video games is gradually intensifying. During which, the person playing becomes addicted little by little. The karma of playing games will make them feel faintly oppressed and uncomfortable; that is, they have already experienced the feeling of bitterness.
Later, the addiction becomes more and more pronounced, as a result, it is not uncommon to see them play all day long, as well as all night long, some collapse or even die suddenly. Such news coverage is not out of the ordinary.
At the same time, the karma generated by playing games is already very strong, and they are almost not at ease when it comes to playing games. If that person is not playing, karma will make them feel miserable. If they follow their karma which leads them to play, it will make them feel The Suffering of Change.
Consequentially, under the motivation of karma, this person will constantly experience the transformation between suffering and The Suffering of Change, lost ruthless circle. Playing games, which once began as state of ease and happiness has ended up a state of unease and unhappiness.
In the conscious mind of most people, the so-called freedom means that when someone wants to do something, they have proper the conditions and ability to do it, people think that as freedom. when a someone is driven to satisfy their own desire, and they have the proper conditions to do so, they mistakenly consider that as freedom.
In actuality, that is not true freedom because when they want to do something but lack the means to fulfill their desires, they will be subject to the force of karma, The Suffering of Existence. When they want to satisfy their own desires and fail to satisfy themselves, they will also experience The Suffering of Existence.
Therefore, this so-called "freedom" is nothing but a choice made under the drive of karma which is merely an unconscious move into karmic bondage to temporarily relieve The Suffering of Existence.
Human beings usually experience so-called "freedom" when they have gone through the Suffering of Existence, only then would they know happiness. In fact, the essence of happiness is The Suffering of Change.
