Enormous gratitude from the Buddha
Holding gratitude in mind is the great sense of "when drinking water, one should not forget its source" [Chinese idiom].
The ancient Chinese saying goes, "Expressing gratitude is the greatest good."
Being grateful in mind is also a kind of life wisdom. Grateful people are easier to feel satisfied and happy. There are as many blessings as there is gratitude in your mind. There is as much suffering as there is resentment in your mind.
Being grateful in mind, thinking about the good qualities of others, it is called “gathering the light”. When the light goes up, it manifests as a smile on the face. A smiling face has the shape of a gold ingot. The lips are like lotus flowers, which definitely bring blessings. Thinking about the bad aspects of others, complaining about others, being jealous of others, hating others, is called “gathering the darkness.” When the dark energy flows down, it manifests as a sour-faced, miserable look, which definitely results in bad luck.
There are ten kinds of gratitude in life that we should keep in mind:
1. The Gratitude of Caring from Heaven and Earth: Heaven and Earth give birth to everything and nourish life. This is Heaven and Earth's most benevolent and kind great virtue. Heaven, Earth, and humans; these three things together are called the "three gifts". Humans should be grateful to Heaven and Earth, follow the Way of Heaven and Earth, and show love and compassion to all beings.
2. The Gratitude of Parental Rearing: The Book of Songs [also known as Shih-ching] says, "Alas! alas! my parents, With what toil and suffering ye gave me birth!" It means that our parents worked very hard to bring us up. When the parents are alive, there is still a home in life; when the parents are gone, there is only a hometown left in life. Never be an ungrateful child!
3. The Gratitude of Siblings: Brothers and sisters are like your hands and feet; the same veins are bound by parents; our blood is thicker than water; we have the same genes from parents growing up in the same family. Family affection is the fertile soil of growing life. Brothers and sisters are from the same kinship, the same root.
4. The Gratitude of the Fate-sharing Husband and Wife: Husband and wife are like two-headed birds who support each other in times of difficulty. they are married, there is no doubt that they are in love with each other. “I grasped your hand, Together with you I was to grow old."
5. The Gratitude of Bosom Friends’ Understanding of Each Other: If you have a friend afar who knows your heart; distance can't keep you two apart. What is a bosom friend? It’s the one who truly understands you, appreciates and supports you spiritually.
6. The Gratitude of a Good Teacher’s Patronage: A teacher for a day is a father for a lifetime. Parents brought us up physically, and our teachers brought us knowledge and wisdom.
7. The Gratitude to a Key Person in Life Who Appreciates and Supports: A key person is the one who appreciates you, who is able to see your true value, and who offers you opportunities to present yourself. Swift horses are common to find, but BoLe (a horse tamer) is rare to meet. Without BoLe in this world, the swift horses would not be recognized in their lives and would end up dying silently. Therefore, how can we not be grateful to the key person who appreciates and supports us!
Note: BoLe, a horse tamer in the Spring and Autumn period, a famous judge of horses. It figuratively means "good judge of [especially hidden] talent."
8. The Gratitude of a Wise Man’s Guidance: Confusion is inevitable in life, especially when you are young. If you can get guidance from a wise person on the lost way, it will benefit you for a lifetime. Communicate more often with extraordinary and wise people and be thankful all the time. Sometimes, only a few words from them could enlighten your mind.
9. The Gratitude of Someone Who Helps You Out of Danger and Emergency: A storm may arise from a clear sky, but human fortunes are as unpredictable as the weather. If someone is willing to save us in danger, such kindness will never be forgotten. A drop of water will be returned with a burst of spring [Chinese proverb]. The life-saving grace will be repaid over the course of a lifetime.
10. The Gratitude of Having Icing on the Cake: Sending help in somebody’s hour of need is no doubt a great virtue and gratitude, whereas sending icing on the cake is a grateful virtue of helping others. Two heads are better than one. Green leaves bring out the shine of red flowers [Chinese proverb]. When one takes charge as chief, when one is in his brilliant time, he should be grateful to those who come to assist and support him instead of coming to bring him down.
